Real Imaginings
A CULMINATING EXHIBITION
FOR THE BACHELOR OF FINE ARTS DEGREE
The act of drawing has always provided me with a sense of expression as well as escape. My twin brother also drew to express his interests and give form to his imagination. I have reflected upon our shared memories and the role that both the real and imagined have played in shaping our childhood experiences.
In this series, we collaborate mostly at the conceptual phase of the works, considering that my brother’s drawing interest as waned. However, his involvement in the development of the image is still crucial as he often brings insight into past events that I may not recall. We revisit memories of rivalry, childhood mischief, adventure, and teamwork. Together, we decide what elements of reality get re-imagined to add humor or poignancy to the emotions of the event. As twins, our connection continues to transform. These collaborations are an act of bonding—a celebration of our past and the cultivation of new experiences.
I am fascinated by drawing as a tool to not only record figures and environments from observation but from memory or invention as well. These drawings can be presented in a factual manner, where the observed and invented elements form a cohesive and believable image.
